Creating Effective Upsells and Promotions

Updated this week

Types of Upsells You Can Create

Frequently Bought Together

The most common upsell type. When a customer buys Product A, suggest Product B that's commonly purchased alongside it.

Examples:

  • Phone case β†’ Screen protector

  • Coffee beans β†’ Coffee grinder

  • Dress β†’ Matching accessories

Add-On Services

Offer services that enhance the product:

  • Gift wrapping

  • Personalization / engraving

  • Express assembly

Warranties & Protection

Offer peace of mind:

  • Extended warranty

  • Damage protection plan

  • Accidental breakage coverage

Upgrades

Suggest premium alternatives:

  • Larger size

  • Premium version

  • Bundle deal

Best Practices

  • Price anchoring: Upsell items should be significantly less than the main purchase (ideally 10-25% of the cart value)

  • Relevance is key: Irrelevant suggestions annoy customers and reduce trust

  • Train your team: Staff should present upsells as helpful suggestions, not pushy sales tactics

  • Measure and iterate: Track which upsells perform best and refine your rules over time

  • Seasonal rotation: Update your upsell rules for holidays, seasons, and promotions
